Don't Let Images of Perfection Keep You From Getting Organized

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

For the past few months, I have been wanting to create a blog post featuring the most beautiful, inspiring, organized spaces. After looking at my gallery of pictures I realized that these perfectly organized spaces mostly exist in magazines, online, or on TV, rather than in our often frenzied everyday lives.

While thinking about this I also realized that I had actually shied away from posting new before and after pictures of my work. The reason is that they might not be impressive enough. If you are on Instagram you probably know what I mean. We are constantly inundated with gorgeous images of picture-perfect closets, pantries, laundry rooms, and more - which I love to see! However, the real-life pictures of my client's spaces don't always mimic those images. Don't get me wrong, my heart often skips a beat when I see matching bins and jars all lined up in a row. They are just not always affordable or necessary when organizing. So, often times we use whatever is on hand or choose inexpensive, yet functional options to keep within the budget.

Yet another thought entered my mind. If I actually posted only these picturesque images, would new, potential clients possibly be too intimidated to hire me? Thinking that they would be expected to spend money on expensive storage solutions if they wanted to get organized?

Most of us have probably experienced some of these pressures of achieving perfection before. Things like: The perfect body. The perfect home. The perfect car...the list goes on. I know that it isn't easy, but why not try to forget about attaining perfection and do the best we can? Using non-matching containers you already own may not be what you want, but if that's all you have, then go ahead and use them for now. Getting organized can be overwhelming enough, there is no need to add unnecessary stress by trying to create a Martha Steward-like environment.

Creating a home, where we can feel comfortable and at peace at the end of the day is certainly a goal worth achieving. To what heights you choose to take it is up to you. Pretty matching boxes and totes are surely an appealing addition to the decor, but don't let the staged magazine images stop you from getting started!

Use the beautiful images as your inspiration, then purge and organize, keeping functionality in mind when choosing your storage solutions. Do what is right for your budget, your style, and your needs.
