Dorm Room Organizing Essentials

Starting college is an exciting time in a young person's life. The preparations, however, can be overwhelming. I included a few suggestions for products in two prior blogs on how to plan your list and how to make the move-in process easier.

This blog post features a more extensive list of organizing solutions to help guide you in your quest. The products shown are mere examples, so pick what style, color, and size you prefer.

Bed Risers

Not all colleges allow the use of bed risers in their dorms, so check before you purchase them. This product is great in tight spaces to maximize under-the-bed storage.

Under-the-bed Storage containers

Use the style that best fits the space and the items to be stored. Think about accessibility. Will the student have to open the storage frequently or are the items rarely used? Drawers are a good option for easy access, whereas rolling bins on wheels are a great way to utilize the deeper space under the bed.

Hanging Closet Organizers

Again, choose the style that best fits the items to be stored and the space. Need a few extra shelves for folded items or shoes? Use hanging shelving units that have drawers and open spaces. The second style below offers additional storage as well as a rod.

Slim-Line Hangers

These are my favorite hangers to use in any home to maximize closet space while keeping clothing from slipping off. Opt for a heavy duty style with a 360 degree swivel hook.

Shelving or Drawer Units

If space allows, add shelving or drawer units for additional storage in closets or anywhere in the room. Lofting a bed will let you use storage cubes or drawer units, such as the one pictured below.

Rolling Carts

I love these because they can be used in multiple ways. Use them as a bedside table, a coffee station, a snack station, for personal or school supplies - the possibilities are endless!

Cube Shelving

Another multipurpose product that comes in a variety of size options (3, 4, 6, 8 or 9 cubbies). I love using these in closets, under beds or as a shelving unit to function as a TV stand, kitchen nook, bookshelf, you name it. Use it with or without storage cubes depending on what you intend to store.

Cube Ottoman Organizer

A great option for additional storage and seating.

Magazine Organizers

These are great to store a variety of items, such as hair products (blowdryer, brushes,etc), school supplies or food. They are available in different color and materials.

Command Hooks

Wall hooks are great to make use of wall space. Use one to hang keys near the door and make it a habit to hang them up as soon as you enter. Hang towels or jackets on the back of a door, be creative!

Desk Organizers

Use organizers to store items on top of the desk and in drawers. Consider adding a small desktop shelf or even a removable hutch for additional storage.

Shower Caddy

Finding the right shower caddy can simplify the bathroom routine. I like this mesh bag since it dries quickly and is lightweight.

Jewelry/Hair Accessory Organizer

Choose from hanging or standing organizers. The first style pictured below can be hung up or rolled and stored in a drawer.
